How to stop everyone turning up at once
You have ten tables free and you do not want all ten arriving at 7pm. The kitchen gets slammed, service drops, and the next hour is quiet. Pacing spreads the arrivals out for you.
Watch: Stop Everyone Turning Up at Once
Use pacing to spread bookings across the evening so the kitchen isn't hit all at once. 50 sec
What pacing does
Pacing puts a limit on how many bookings, or how many people, can start in any 15 minute window. Say you set it to 24 covers. Once the 7pm window has 24 people booked, 7pm shows as full and guests are offered 7:15 instead. Your busy nights come in as a steady trickle instead of one rush.
Bookings or covers?
Choose Covers per 15 minutes if the kitchen is your limit, because it counts the people. Choose Bookings per 15 minutes if every table is about the same amount of work, whatever the size of the party.
Picking a number
Start with what your kitchen can really cook in 15 minutes and go a little under. Watch a busy night, then nudge it up or down. If you leave Pace by on No pacing, there is no limit, which is how it starts out.

Pacing sits next to Max covers per service, which puts a ceiling on the whole evening, and works well with turn times and booking rules. Running a Sunday roast? See Sunday roast bookings.

Can I stagger bookings so every table does not arrive at 7pm?
Yes. Use pacing. It limits how many bookings or covers can start in any 15 minute window, so once a slot is full guests are offered the next one.
Should I pace by bookings or covers?
Covers counts the people, which suits a kitchen that is limited by how many meals it can cook. Bookings counts tables, which suits a venue where every table takes about the same effort.
What do guests see when a time is full?
That time shows as full and they can pick another time, such as 15 minutes later.
Do I need a paid plan?
No. Pacing is in your Tables settings on every plan.
