API keys and webhooks, explained simply

Most venues never need this page. It is for when you have a kiosk, till, wall display or other system and you want it to talk to your bookings. If that is not you, you can skip it.

Quick answer. Open API and webhooks in the left menu under Account, press Create key and copy it straight away. API access is switched on per account, currently as part of the Group plan, so ask us if you do not see it.

Two simple ideas

An API key is a password for another computer system. With it, that system can read and manage your bookings. A webhook goes the other way: Tablez sends a short message to an address you choose every time something happens, like a new booking.

How to create a key

  1. In the left menu, under Account, click API and webhooks. Only the owner login sees it.
  2. Press Create key.
  3. Copy the key straight away. It is shown once and we cannot show it again.
  4. Give it to whoever builds your system. The full instructions are on the page under the heading "Full docs, endpoints and example code". Always use the API address shown there, never your own yourname.tablez.uk address.

Create a new key replaces the old one, and anything using the old key stops working. Revoke key switches it off straight away.

How to set up a webhook

  1. In Your webhook address, type the web address (it must start with https) where your system listens.
  2. Under Send an event when a booking is, tick what you want: New / needs a decision, Confirmed, Declined, Cancelled, Seated / arrived, No show or Changed.
  3. Press Save.
  4. Press Send test webhook to check it arrives.

Once the address is saved, a Webhook signing secret appears. Your developer uses it to check a message really came from Tablez. The page also shows when the last webhook went out and whether it worked.

Questions people ask

Do I need this?

Only if you have your own kiosk, till, screen or other system to connect. Normal use of Tablez does not need it.

Which plan includes the API?

It is switched on per account, on request, currently as part of the Group plan. Get in touch and tell us what you want to connect.

I lost my API key.

We cannot show it again. Press Create a new key. Remember anything using the old key will stop working until you update it.

Where can my developer find the details?

On the page itself there is a link to the full developer documentation, and our developers page has an overview.
